One nuclear bomb can ruin your whole afternoon

Although if it is only a few kilotons, you might salvage the evening.

So I was thinking about atomic weapons (gee, I don't get to say that often enough!) and looking back to the fear that anyone who grew up during the cold war felt, about Global Thermonuclear War and Wargames and The Day After (filmed in my home town of Lawrence, in case you were curious) and so forth. I am very thankful that among all the various fears we live with today (terrorism, oil shortages, grey goo, unexplained kernel panics, etc.) that having the world end in a massive exchange of nuclear weapons is pretty much unthinkable.

Ironically, the chance of one bomb going off somewhere (probably as a result of terrorists) is probably higher then it has ever been. But the odds of 2000 bombs going off is probably as low as it has ever been, and for that I am relieved.
