Grand

As someone who is nominally a Democrat, but who is often at odds with the official Democratic Party, I have a lot of sympathy for moderate or liberal Republicans. These folks represent the best traditions of the old Party of Lincoln, with a progressive view on social issues combined with a libertarian take on personal and economic freedom and conservative views on national security. Unfortunately, these people are often mere passengers on a ship driven hard to starboard by the intolerant religious right. Still, there are signs of hope. Even in a state as conservative as Kansas, there are Republicans doing the right thing.

I am very excited to see the creation of a new group blog created by longtime Kansas blogger George Walberg called Grand New Party, which has quickly been added to my "must read" list. Moving from cyberspace to actual space, we have the new Kansas Traditional Republican Majority, which will work to elected moderate Republicans to office. They just got started, but they have a shiny new web site and are led by Ryan Wright, who previously served as press secretary for First District Congressman Jerry Moran, a Republican from Hays, Kansas.

It is a long road ahead for these folks, but if they can take their party back from the religious right, it will be good for the country -- for all Republicans -- and Democrats -- who believe in constitutional democracy and equality under the law. Good luck!

UPDATE: The conservative Republican blog "Kansas Meadowlark" has excellent background information on the Kansas Traditional Republican Majority, including political resumés for its leadership. The Meadowlark intends this information to used as ammunition by theocrats opposed to the new G.O.P. group, but reading through the list of distinguished founders and their political accomplishments is actually a very hopeful and positive experience, and gives me very good vibes about the future of this group and the positive influence they may have on politics in my state.
