Christian charity in action

New Jersey board rejects appeal from dying cop.

Her doctors have given her only a few months to live, but despite the cancer which has ravaged her body law enforcement officer Laurel Hester made a last ditch appeal Wednesday night for Ocean County freeholders to give her same-sex partner her death benefits.

Mind you, this isn't a call for "special rights" or a benefit beyond what the law allows. New Jersey law explicitly allows domestic partners to be granted such benefits if local boards choose. In this case, one local board is choosing to display a form of bigotry more at home in the antebellum South then the America of 2006.

UPDATE: They finally do the Right Thing
