Concealed Carry is the law in Kansas

The legislature just overrode the governor's veto of Kansas' concealed carry law.

As someone with fairly libertarian leanings, I approve of this new law and think it is a good idea. Or, to be more precise, I do not think it is a bad idea.

The law allows citizens who pass a battery of psychological tests and background screenings a permit to carry a concealed gun if they take a training course. The law also prevents those with a history of violence or crime from getting a permit. It also prohibits guns from businesses that serve liquor as well as schools and government buiuldings. Finally, the rights of private businesses are protected, as they can prohibit guns on their premises if they wish.

So, basically this law will allowed for qualified, trained law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons in designated areas. I fail to see how this is a threat to public safety. In the numerous other states where concealed carry has become law, the hysterical predictions of frequent shoot-outs between agitated pistol-packin' people have not occured. In fact, there has been no increase in gun deaths in states with these laws. The other side is that the concealed carry laws don't really prevent much crime in a general sense (although there are many individual cases where they have been used to prevent violent crimes), but this law will make vulnerable people feel safer, and it won't harm anyone.
