That Music Post

Gee, thanks Brian!

OK, here it goes...

Total size of music files on my computer:

124.98 GB, of which about 60 GB are legitimate rips of CD-based music, about 2 GB are "fairly used" singles and other tracks which I won't tell the RIAA about, and the remainder are concerts by taper-friendly (and some not-so-friendly) bands.

The last CD I bought was:

Weezer's new one. Well, that was the last new CD I bought. I picked up a couple CDs at Amoeba records in San Francisco during Apple' developer conference...."Prom" by Amy Ray and "Storytellers" by Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Song playing right now in iTunes:

Nothing. iTunes is silent. I have my iPod with me for the trip, and it is packed. But I will listen to some U2 as soon as I board the plane, so does that count?

Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:

"Analog Kid" by Rush -- One of Rush's finest and most emotional songs about growing up, about longing for things and dreaming.

"One" by U2 -- A really deep and driving song which can be interpreted in many ways. Is it about losing a loved one to HIV? Is it about a father and a son reconciling? Is it a simple love song? Is it a complex love song? It might be all of those or none of those.

"Single Bilingual" by the Pet Shop Boys -- A glib, happy song, with one of the funniest music videos ever put to film. Euro-techno-dance silliness at its best. A real pick-me-up.

"Shnirele Perle" by the Klezmatics -- The Klezmatics interpretation of the klezmer classic song about the Jewish longing for the messianic age. Has some of the most haunting lyrics and melodies of any song in my library.

"The Power of Two" by the Indigo Girls -- This simple, sweet love song is "our song" for Dave and me.

Five people to whom I’m passing the baton:

I am flying back from Apple's WWDC in five minutes...so this part will have to wait.
